2023 Kyung Hee HCR 1%
Kowhanag Emeritus Professor Jong-whan Rhim of the Dept. of Food and Nutrition joined the 2023 Highly Cited Researchers. Since 2016, Prof. Rhim has been nominated among the World’s 1% Highly Cited Researchers(HCR) in Agricutural Science sector by Clarivate analytics(Formerly Thomson Reuters). Professor Jong-whan Rhim has been a leading authority in the development of biodegradable and functional nanocomposite packaging materials.
Professor Rhim was selected in the field of Agricultural Science, as he has been a leading authority in the field of biodegradable and functional nanocomposite packaging mateirals. He has published almost 260 papers in domestic and international academic journals over the past 30 years.
In 2019, he won the 5th Daesang Hanlim Food Science Award in recognition of his research achievements. He is also the winner of 2014 Korea Food Packaging Society Academic Award, the 2015 Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning Knowledge Creation Award, and the 2017 Korea Food Science Society Academic Award. He has nominated as an HCR for eight consecutive years since 2016.
His research subject is very specific as nanocomposite and food packaging yet it examines various life organisms such as kohlrabi, shrimp, ehnoki mushrooms or even fresh fruits like bananas. Prof. Rhim never stops searching for sustainable way of environment-free packaging and its applications. According to the Elsevier’s Pure, his total Citation is over 23,000 and 88 h-index since 1988 until 2023.
Professor Rhim’s recent research paper is ‘Carrageenan-based multifunctional packaing films containing Zn-carbon dots’anthocyanin derived from Kohlrabi peel for monitoring quality and extending the shelf life of shrimps’ 30 Jan 2024, In: Food Chemistry. Prof. Rhim is well-known for having diverse international researchers in his labortory. Recently, Ruchir Priyadarshi, Ahmed A.Oun, Parya Ezati and Soottawat Benjakul, co-researchers in his laboratory, have been nominated as the World’s 2% Highly Cited Researchers of 2023 by Elsevier.

In 2023, 97 researchers from Kyung Hee University were nominated as part of the world's top 2% researchers announced by Stanford University. Kyung Hee University ranks as the 8th institution in Korea with the highest number of researchers selected. Including companies in Kyung Hee corporate body such as Kyung Hee Medical Center, Kyung Hee's nominees are total 97 staffs both in Seoul and Global campus.
Among the nominees, Professor Jong-Hwan Im has been selected as the world's top 1% of Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivates. The selection process was based on Scopus, a comprehensive citation database. The analysis was conducted on researchers worldwide who have published a minimum of 5 papers in 22 major academic fields and 174 specific subject areas, the updated database (ver. 6) provides standardized information on citations, using six key evaluation indicators including total citations and h-index. The final selection was made on October 4, 2023. This news has been covered by various news outlets, highlighting the academic achievements of Kyung Hee University researchers on a global scale.
In Korea, total 2,119 researchers were selected as the world's top 2% researchers. Among them, the field with the largest number of researchers is Enabling & Strategic Technologies (527 researchers), followed by Clinical Medicine (369 researchers), Engineering (317 researchers), Chemistry (260 researchers), and Physics & Astronomy (219 researchers).
