The Industrial and Academic Cooperation Foundation has been awarded two government grants—BRIDGE 3.0 and TMC—aimed at accelerating the commercialization of cutting-edge technologies

The Industrial and Academic Cooperation Foundation is committed to creating a sustainable cycle of innovation by identifying and commercializing Kyung Hee’s unique, high-value technologies, thereby enhancing the university’s competitiveness. Director Een-Kee Hong stated, “Our goal is to integrate all of our ongoing initiatives—ranging from the Intellectual Property Creation and Utilization Support Program to the Bio-Clinical Technology Commercialization Platform Support Program—into a comprehensive technology commercialization framework. This approach will enable us to achieve substantial mid-to-large scale outcomes.”

Leveraging Cutting-Edge Research to Strengthen University Competitiveness
The foundation has identified four core areas—Advanced Biotechnology, Next-Generation ICT, Secondary Batteries, and Artificial Intelligence—as key sectors for technology commercialization. It is actively focused on discovering promising research laboratories in these fields. Each year, a selection committee evaluates labs based on technological excellence, market potential, and other critical criteria. This year, five labs specializing in technology transfer and two focused on startups were selected. These labs will collaborate closely with the university’s technology innovation team to develop strategic portfolios and align with industry demands.

These efforts have already led to significant accomplishments. For instance, Kyung Hee now holds over 400 international video standard patents for its video codec technology, the largest such portfolio among universities worldwide. In 2023, the university transferred biotechnology worth 2.1 billion KRW and secured 3.7 billion KRW in investments for a subsidiary of its technology holdings company. Director Hong remarked, “These achievements are the result of Kyung Hee’s exceptional technological capabilities and the dedicated efforts of our commercialization team.”

“Expanding Support for Faculty-Led Startups”
The foundation also offers extensive support for faculty members who wish to commercialize their research. “Transitioning from technology development to commercialization is a significant challenge,” Director Hong explained. “We provide a comprehensive support system, including matching faculty with experienced CEOs, identifying valuable intellectual property, and facilitating investment opportunities. Our ultimate goal is to see Kyung Hee-born companies thrive, with the potential to become publicly traded.”

With the backing of the BRIDGE 3.0 and TMC grants, the foundation is poised to set new benchmarks in technology transfer. “Being recognized as a leader in technology presents us with opportunities to collaborate with top global companies and institutions,” Director Hong said. “We are expanding our revenue streams and building new channels to ensure that we can continue investing in technology commercialization even after these projects conclude.”

Director Hong also encouraged faculty members interested in commercialization to engage with the foundation: “Kyung Hee’s research capabilities are second to none in the nation, and we have the support systems in place to help bring these technologies to market. The recent grants are a golden opportunity to provide meaningful assistance. By partnering with us, faculty can refine their ideas and work towards mutual growth and success.”
